Mastermind groups are all the rage these days, and it’s no wonder why. They help entrepreneurs network, collaborate, and support each other while they build and grow their businesses. For high-brokerage insurance agents who don’t have time to sit around a table with their peers twice a week, mastermind groups can be especially helpful and convenient. There are many different types of mastermind groups out there, so which one should you join?

Key factor #1: A Diverse Group of People
This can mean geographic diversity, industry diversity, or even specialty diversity. There are many different types of mastermind groups out there. Some are small and local while others may be international with participants from all over. The first step in joining a group is finding one that fits your goals and personality. If you’re not sure what you’re looking for yet, reach out to different agents who belong to different groups and ask them questions about their experience with their group (how long they’ve been a member, if they would recommend it, etc.).

Key factor #2: Access to Expertise
The second and equally important characteristic of a mastermind group is access to expertise. Some of us are experts in certain areas, but not so much in others. So being part of a mastermind group where you have access to knowledge-and-expertise provides value even if you’re not an expert in every area. This is why it’s crucial that all members bring something unique and relevant to add into the conversation and decision making process (but still respect each other).

Key factor #3: Interactive Discussions
Do you like being engaged and interacting with people? Do you have a passion for finding new answers and solving problems together? If yes, then join an interactive mastermind group. Interactive mastermind groups are ones that meet regularly and encourage your participation in each meeting. Each meeting will usually start with an exercise such as checking in where everyone has a chance to share what’s been going on over the past week or so. Then, members will typically lead some kind of workshop or business building activity. This is probably one of my favorite types of mastermind groups because there is always something new happening; if you get bored easily, these groups might not be for you! However, if you enjoy sharing knowledge and learning new things, I definitely recommend it!

Key factor #4: A Group Mentality
The best, most effective mastermind groups all have one thing in common; a can do mentality. Each member knows that no matter what happens, they’ll work together as a team and help each other out. No one person can be successful without help from others. It’s important that you find a group where everyone is driven and focused on success – not just looking to take advantage of other people’s ideas. A successful Mastermind Group involves at least four or five members who will look out for each other, motivate each other and push each other forward.

Key factor #5: Mutual Support
Mastermind groups aren’t just about business; they’re about support. This can mean a lot of things, but often it comes down to people who you can count on through thick and thin. When you meet a handful of new entrepreneurs every week, after a while you’ll start getting a real sense of what that means—maybe it means someone who knows how to listen without taking sides, or maybe it means someone with whom you can vent your frustrations without feeling judged. In any case, when you get down to brass tacks, mastermind groups are about accountability; knowing that other entrepreneurs are keeping tabs on how you spend your time and how much success (or failure) is coming out of it provides security and motivation in equal measure.

Key factor #6: To Share Knowledge and Help Others Succeed
Are you a natural educator? Do you thrive in an environment where you can share your knowledge with others? If so, a mastermind group may be ideal. When you join a group that’s focused on generating results, your interest and success will help others as well. They’ll listen attentively to what you have to say and learn from it; likewise, they can share ideas with you that will help both of you improve your processes. In addition, mastermind groups provide an opportunity for members to further their knowledge about new trends or market conditions that are affecting other people in their industry. This is yet another way to make connections and solidify relationships—while helping others at the same time.

Key factor #7: Great Resources/Networking Opportunities
If you don’t have a solid support system, it’s going to be difficult to succeed. Some groups offer seminars and training on topics relevant to your business—and that can be invaluable. It’s important not only that you are exposed to new knowledge, but also that you find ways of connecting with other industry leaders. This kind of sharing and camaraderie can make or break your business success—so it’s worth investing in a mastermind group that encourages networking opportunities as well as meeting face-to-face.
